The magic of Calcium

Today let's talk about Calcium and it's roll within our body. It is recommended we get at least 1000mg of calcium daily.

Some of the signs we might see that indicate a deficiency are high cholesterol, blood pressure issues and palpitations, convulsions, leg cramps and aching joints, bone disorders such as rickets, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tooth decay and discoloration, PMS, depression and delusions, hyperactivity and trouble falling asleep. You might find white spots on your nails, or they may be dry and brittle, sometimes with horizontal lines, also nails may be weak and soft. You may experience an overactive digestive system with reflux and irritable bowel syndrome.... phew!!!! That's quite a bit for just one little mineral eh!

But there's more...we also have some therapeutic uses for Calcium too, this is what our bodies use calcium for...

Calcium helps with muscle contraction and nerve conduction, it helps regulate our heart beat, assists with the storage and release of hormones, and with blood coagulation. It is vital for the health of our bones, teeth and gums, it also is involved with cell membrane permeability (this means the nutrients we need are getting into the cells that need them). It regulates the enzymes responsible for fat digestion and for protein metabolism, and last but not least, calcium is believed to protect the mucosa of the bowel.

We can find calcium in milk and dairy foods, seaweed and other seafoods, nuts and seeds especially almonds, Brazil nuts and sesame seeds, black-strap molasses, peas and meat.

If you are concerned about getting enough Calcium or perhaps related to any of the symptoms mentioned, it is well worth looking into a supplement to help cover this need.

I tend to recommend a supplement that also has other supporting and related vitamins and minerals, purely because they are formulated to enhance the bio-availability (absorption) in the body, they are designed to work synergistically. This ensures you are not only getting the best intake of calcium, but also the other nutrients required for that calcium to work at its best within you.
